Water Closet 101: The Benefits of Adding a Private Toilet Room

Primary bathroom with separate bathtub, shower, and water closetWhile itโ€™s no secret what a bathroom is ultimately for, sometimes you donโ€™t want the toilet to be the first thing you see โ€“ or at the very least, not the focus of the room โ€“ especially in a primary bathroom. Thatโ€™s what makes a water closet, also called a toilet room, an attractive option for a primary bathroom remodel.

โ€œA water closet not only offers privacy, but it can also help improve the overall presentation of the space,โ€ Normandy Designer Kathryn Oโ€™Donovan says. โ€œIf you want a more dramatic effect for your primary bathroom, and have the square footage, a water closet might be a good option.โ€

Sometimes moving the location of the door can help shift focus from the toilet, if aesthetics are your only concern, but a fully private water closet can help on those busy mornings when everyone is rushing to get ready and could benefit from some privacy.

โ€œA water closet can help improve the function of a shared bathroom, whether thatโ€™s for a couple, or the kidsโ€™ bathroom,โ€ Kathryn says. โ€œNo matter how comfortable you and your family members are around each other, sometimes you just need that separate space.โ€

A water closet with a door also has hygienic benefits, as it helps contain airborne particles in one space after flushing.

Depending on your layout, you may be able to build around your existing toilet location. If thatโ€™s not possible, and you want to move the location of your toilet, then one of the factors that comes into play is the location of the joists, and making sure the new location is properly supported structurally.

Water closets, which are basically a small adjoining room, offer an opportunity to get creative with design elements, as well. Maybe a tile color or wallpaper pattern that you thought was too overwhelming for a larger space could offer a nice pop of personality here.

Step Up Your Slab Backsplash With a Ledge

White modern kitchen with slab backsplash and shelf above the rangeGoing for a minimalist look in your kitchen design? A ledge or shelf for your slab backsplash is not only stylish but convenient โ€“ you can have your spices within reach, or even a framed photo of your โ€œbest cook everโ€ grandmother โ€“ but picking the right material is key in this design process.

โ€œIf youโ€™re opting for a more open, minimalist look to your range area, a slab backsplash with a ledge offers some added functionality,โ€ Normandy Designer Kathryn Oโ€™Donovan says. โ€œBut when choosing your material, keep in mind that while natural stone will likely meet local fire and building codes for behind a range, some engineered materials may not.โ€

The heat produced from an open-flame range can change the chemical composition and impact the color of some engineered stone, which contains resin thatโ€™s used to bind crushed natural material.

โ€œA slab backsplash, shelf or no shelf, made from engineered materials canโ€™t always co-exist with an open-burner range,โ€ she says. โ€œSome manufacturers wonโ€™t warranty their products in this scenario.โ€

But if you donโ€™t choose natural stone, you still have options.

Marble slab backsplash ledge backsplash shelfโ€œIf you have your heart set on a certain type of engineered material, there is always the option to go with an induction range, which produces minimal heat,โ€ Kathryn says. โ€œAn induction range also adds to the minimalist aesthetic that often inspires a backsplash ledge design.โ€

Oftentimes, people opt for the same material as the range backsplash for their backsplash shelf. But you can opt for a different shelf material, depending on the look youโ€™re trying to achieve โ€“ just avoid flammable materials like wood, and seek out non-combustible options. While you can discuss the ideal depth of the ledge with your designer, backsplash ledges or backsplash shelves are generally about four inches deep.

Another thing to keep in mind, especially if you have a natural stone ledge, is that you can request to have the underside of the ledge to be polished or honed to match the finish on the top.

โ€œSome natural stones might have mesh on the underside for stability, which can detract from a streamlined look,โ€ Kathryn says. โ€œAnd keep in mind that not all materials can be polished on both sides, like porcelain. Itโ€™s important to ask these questions before you make your final decision on the material.โ€
