Deformalize The Dining Room

Informal dining areaA beautiful dining room can encourage hanging out anytime, not just on a few formal occasions each year. As families embrace flexibility in all areas of their lives, the dining room is no exception. Instead of a space meant to impress guests, rethinking the formal dining space allows for maximum function, practicality and enjoyment as defined by you.

“Most people don’t want a room that’s just used for occasional formal dining,” said Normandy Designer Maury Jones. “They like the open concept style of living with a larger eat-in kitchen.”

Bar area with casual diningIf you are looking for more of a flow between your kitchen and dining room, Maury advises, “Take the walls down. Take over the dining room and make it into a larger kitchen where your family can cook together, entertain and get the most use out of the space. “Those who take this bold step are delighted with the results. It’s not an option for every home though.

If you do need to keep your dining room separate, Maury recommends the creative use of built-ins.”Think about adding an entertaining center with a wet bar and wine storage.”Doing so gives guests a place to gather when you are entertaining. When it’s just family, the addition of an entertainment center makes the room a great place to gather for cards or board games.

Lighting is another way to make the room feel less formal. “There are some really interesting hanging fixtures that can help create an inviting feeling for a dining room,” said Maury.

Well Covered Doorways Are Welcoming Doorways

House with addition over the garageIt only takes being stuck at the uncovered side door fumbling for your keys in the rain one time to realize that every door of your home should be covered.

After all, an entryway is more than just a door. When an entryway is well-designed, it’s truly the ultimate welcome. So while it might seem like something you can get by without, even a small roof over a door truly is the ultimate gracious greeting.

“With a covered entry, friends can stand out front without roasting in the hot sun or being soaked by the cold rain,” Normandy Designer Bill Peterson explains. A covered door offers shelter for arriving guests, protects packages delivered during the day, and enhances the overall curb appeal of your home.View of back door

Architecturally cohesive roofs for each door are the way to go. That doesn’t mean cookie cutter, though. “Use your over-the-door roofs to give character to the home and impart some personal style,” Bill says.

Think of each door not as a separate entity, but a part of the whole. Adjusting for size and scale will help your front, side and back entryways appear as welcoming and practical as possible. You might think of your front porch as a part of your foyer or the backdoor as a shortcut to coffee and conversation with a friend. Use those cues to create roofs that are much more than just shelter. “It’s a really nice element to be able to add,” Bill says.

The perfect time to tackle exterior enhancements like adding roofs over doors is when you have another project planned. These upgrades can be completed while you’re under construction and your designer will use a holistic approach to integrate them seamlessly into your existing home and your addition or remodel.
