Small Chicago Condo gets Big Upgrade

Chicago condo small kitchen looking into living room with entertainment centerSome families have a second home in the country, but this couple craved the city life. Their getaway is a modest Chicago condo that needed some big changes to improve the functionality and flow. Normandy Designer Jeremy Paris helped them create a more inviting space they could look forward to visiting on weekends.

Adding storage was one of their top requests, which at first glance would seem a challenge. โ€œRegardless of the projectโ€™s size, I approach the design process in the same manner, evaluating their needs and working with the space we have,โ€ Jeremy says. โ€œWe discussed how they were using the kitchen and adjacent living room and decided to make the rooms work in conjunction.โ€

The large TV in the living room was a given. We customized the built-in entertainment center, incorporating a beverage center right where they entertain. โ€œItโ€™s a great supplement to the small refrigerator in the kitchen,โ€ Jeremy says. Hidden from view is a pull-out laptop desk to the left of the beverage center. Although the condo is a place of relaxation, sometimes work still needs to get done and having a workspace that is easily accessible was important.

Avoiding stainless steel appliances removed the possibility that they could dominate the room.โ€

As for the appliances, you can still get the same conveniences of a full size kitchen while choosing pieces that are proportional to the footprint. Their refrigerator, for instance is a slender 30โ€ wide compared to the standard 36โ€. It includes a freezer and ice maker, located in the pull out drawers below. Between the two of them, not many dishes pile up, so a compact dishwasher drawer was sufficient. ย โ€œAlthough the under-counter wall oven is a standard size, itโ€™s paired with an induction cooktop that is only 15โ€ x 15โ€, which works because itโ€™s rare they need more than two burners for cooking,โ€ Jeremy says. small gray kitchen in Chicago condo with compact dishwasher and induction cooktopโ€œThe previous standard sized appliances made the whole room feel crowded. These selections are appropriate for the space and create a sense of openness.โ€

Traditional countertop appliances, such as their microwave and coffeemaker are conveniently tucked into the appliance garage, next to the fridge. One more hidden gem is a touch latch panel on the side of the upper cabinet just inside their entry door, where they can easily store their keys and essentials. Each of these elements help to keep the countertops clear of clutter.

A small kitchen can still boast an impactful design and include all of the necessities of a large kitchen. Warrenville Couple Gets Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel

white farmhouse kitchen with stackable washer dryerThis busy bohemian couple aspired to remodel their quaint kitchen, one day. As outdoor enthusiasts, updating the interior of their home often fell to the wayside, until they remodeled their family room and experienced the impact it made. They wanted to fall in love with their kitchen in the same way and called on Normandy Designer Laura Barber to partner with them on their project.

Naturally, when a couple has been planning a remodel for long a time, theyโ€™ve accumulated bits and pieces to incorporate. โ€œThey wanted a fresh, crisp farmhouse kitchen that expressed their love of nature and their eclectic personalities. Armed with a beautiful, patterned accent tile sheโ€™d been saving, and a rich antique table, we designed a space for better functionality with a few upgrades,โ€ says Laura.

The renovation would be limited to the existing kitchen footprint, and it was critical that every item had a purpose and fit in its designated place. โ€œWe got creative with the design and looked for tricks to make the most of every inch. Every element in this kitchen has a very specific, intentional purpose that we thoroughly scrutinized to make sure it earned its place in the design,โ€ Laura says.

โ€œBeyond incorporating her tile as an accent above the oven and the antique table as a butcher block next to the sink, we added crystal knobs on the cabinet doors, which added to the kitchen’s vintage feeling,โ€ says Laura. โ€œThe countertops are quartz, in a honed matte finish which looks like soapstone and compliments the down-to-earth style of the kitchen so nicely.โ€

โ€œOne the biggest surprises we made was removing the drop ceiling and discovering we could raise the ceiling height to 9.5โ€™. This allowed for a vaulted ceiling which really opened up the space nicely,โ€ Laura adds.

Using durable materials was important for their particular space. โ€œThey board horses and are often in and out from the barn, with dogs in tow, so we opted for a beautiful vinyl floor. The wood-look flooring is hearty yet stays true to the fresh farmhouse appeal.โ€BEFORE kitchen dining area

โ€œThis kitchen was a vision years in the making and Iโ€™m so excited I got to partner with this couple to help them achieve a kitchen they absolutely adore,โ€ Laura says.

We love to help families create truly unique spaces in their home, and our aim with each project is to reflect the character of the family who lives there.
