Guest Bedroom Design Tips From A Designer

Bedroom window treatmentsNormandy Designer Leslie Molloy, CKD was recently prompted to finish the guest bedroom in her recently purchased home; after she and her husband decided to have her in-laws come into town for a weekend. With many homeowners preparing to host family and friends over the holidays, Leslie had these design tips to share on how to decorate the spare bedroom and have it ready in time for your guests’ visit.

Inspiration: โ€œI had found these great window treatments that featured neutral and deep orange climbing plants with bluebirds, that I absolutely fell in love with,โ€ says Leslie. โ€œBecause I was starting with a blank canvas, I was able to use this color scheme as my inspiration throughout the entire space.โ€ Finding decorative elements you love brings your personal touch to the space, and in this case, adds visual interest and height to the room as well.

Personal Elements: โ€œI was able to add a few more personal touches to the room with some select photographs, vintage dressers, a mirror, and an end table that had been handed down to me,โ€ continued Leslie. โ€œThe dark color of the furniture adds additional warmth to the space and allows guests to have a place to unpack and feel at home.โ€Colorful accent pieces

Colorful accent piecesRelaxing Environment: It is important to create a guest room that can act as a temporary home-away-from-home for your visitors. You want to be sure they have enough privacy to make themselves comfortable and create a relaxing atmosphere for them with the combination of color and dรฉcor. โ€œAs you can see here, I drew color from the curtains for the accent pillows, throw blanket, and wall color,โ€ says Leslie. โ€œWhat I love most about the neutral wall color is that it changes in the natural light throughout the day.โ€ Leslie also added decorative wall elements and surrounding accent pieces to bring pops of color to surrounding areas and balance the accent colors throughout the space. If you want to take your room accents to the next level, you can also use an accent wallย to add visual interest and texture to the space.

The Formation of a Home Elevator Installation

Northbrook additionThese Northbrook residents, who have worked closely with Normandy Designer Vince Weber over the years for prior renovations, love their house and wanted to be sure they could stay in their home as long as possible as they age. ย โ€œOne of the challenges they were concerned about for the future is the location of their primary bathroom, which is on the second floor,” says Vince. ย “Creating an addition for a first floor primary suite was not a good option for them, so in the end, we determined that the best solution would be to expand their existing primary suite and install a two-story elevator.โ€ The elevator solved the problems that the stairs could one day pose as they aged and gave them the longevity they had hoped for in their home.

โ€œTo fit the style of their traditional home, we used Mahogany to line the elevator and wood flooring,โ€ added Vince. โ€œWe implemented a 42in. x 60in. design, which leaves plenty of space for the possibility of a wheelchair or walker, standard white interior doors that matched the rest of the home, and an accordion elevator door.โ€ Vince was able to design a fully functional home for these homeowners and meet all of their future needs to live comfortably in their new space. The two-story elevator gave these homeowners the home they had longed for as well as a fifth bedroom, leaving them with plenty of space for their growing family to create memories for years to come.
