Downers Grove Kitchen Remodel

Just about anything can be the inspiration behind a beautiful kitchen. In the case of this Downers Grove kitchen remodel, it was an important family heirloom – copper canisters.  These beautiful canisters led Normandy Designer Ann Stockard to come up with a traditional kitchen design that possesses a variety of metal finishes, unique display cabinets, and an overall warm and cozy feel.

“The copper canisters really inspired a mix of beautiful metal finishes,” said Ann. “This includes oil rubbed bronze hardware and light fixtures, a decorative copper backsplash, and a range that is comprised of stainless steel and polished brass.”

“Additionally, the antique canisters are proudly displayed inside the upper cabinetry that flanks the range hood,” noted Ann. “And those cabinets have their own antique brass wire mesh, which adds yet another finish.”

In addition to mixing metal finishes, this kitchen is also comprised of a variety of cabinetry finishes. The perimeter is an eggshell, while the island is sage green. Both have a brown glaze with a matte sheen, which highlights architectural details such as the feet below the sink and a curved, custom range hood. Additionally, the buffet has a brandy finish with a black glaze, which nicely emphasizes its ornate pilasters.

To continue to keep the space feeling interesting and inviting, the design also features quartz countertops from Cambria.

“Quartz is a man-made countertop that has a small mix of pigment and resins along with the stone. The result is an extremely durable surface that has the look and feel of granite,” said Ann. “In the case of this countertop, it really lent itself to the design because there are flecks of copper within the pattern. This offers plenty of movement.”

“The backsplash is porcelain, which is also extremely durable and easy to maintain while offering the look of a natural stone,” added Ann.

A few other noteworthy features within the kitchen are the microwave in the island, which allowed for more wall cabinets to store dishes. The apron front sink also brought a vintage feel to the space.  As mentioned above, the mixed metal range and custom hood are also unique and beautiful focal points.

In addition to this kitchen renovation, the wall between the dining room and kitchen was expanded. This gave the space a more open and airy feel and made the kitchen more accessible while entertaining.

“In order to expand this opening we really had to get creative with the HVAC supplies that we’re feeding to the second story,” said Ann. “However, once relocated, it made a big difference within the space.”

La Grange Home Makeover: Modern Kitchen Remodel and Exterior Updates

Before and after exterior renovation by Normandy Design Manager Troy PavelkaThis LaGrange family loved to entertain, and their existing layout wasn’t working particularly well for gatherings of family and friends. They called upon Normandy Design Manager Troy Pavelka to come up with some kitchen ideas and curb appeal concepts that would charm their visitors, and make the home more livable.

Prior to renovating, the home had segmented spaces and felt disconnected from the backyard and pool area.  An open-concept layout was in order to create more cohesive spaces, which also provided the opportunity to create a stronger connection to the outdoors.

“In order to achieve an open floor plan, a load-bearing wall and fireplace needed to be removed from the center of the home,” said Troy. “After careful consideration, it was determined that replacing the wall with a structural beam would be the best option because it allowed for a seamless ceiling detail.”

Modern, open concept kitchen with large island“To further improve the flow of the rooms inside the home, the dining room and entry were pushed out toward the front yard with a small addition,” added Troy.

As it turns out, utilizing this plan paid off in a big way. It not only created an open and functional space that was conducive for entertaining but established a more appropriate entry into the home. However, connecting the space to the backyard still needed to be addressed.

Backyard pergola and in-ground swimming pool“In order to provide a smooth transition to the beautifully landscaped backyard and pool area, we included a decorative pergola and triple patio door into the design,” said Troy. “This allowed guests to easily shift between the two spaces.”

While an open-concept layout and outdoor connection were important, the kitchen also required a modern aesthetic and custom enhancements that fit the family’s busy lifestyle and love of entertaining.

The kitchen includes espresso-stained cherry cabinetry and a custom glass tileConcealed message center backsplash. Additionally, the kitchen boasts integrated LED cabinet and cove lighting, as well as two different countertops – granite with a suede finish and quartzite. The kitchen island, which serves as the “hub” of the home, provides cool beverages and space to enjoy snacks or eat a quick meal. A concealed message center at the edge of the kitchen keeps the family schedules organized.

The front of the home was also updated. The curb appeal was improved by a decorative roof element between the second story and the garage. The color scheme of the home also changed, and a new siding style and garage door were added. To really bring the new aesthetic home, the remodel also included shutters, window boxes, and two stone columns.
