Natural Stone Looking Tile

bathroom floor ideas that look like natural stone created by Normandy Designer Heather DalskovWhile we all love the look of natural stone, itโ€™s just not very practical in some areas of the home unless youโ€™re on board with the maintenance it requires.ย  So what products are available that give you the look but not the maintenance?

โ€œPorcelain and ceramic tiles are great options that have come a long way in mimicking natural stone,โ€ says Normandy Designer Heather Dalskov.ย  โ€œPorcelain has especially made progress over the years, and has a huge variety available to homeowners.โ€

โ€œThe best lookalikes mimic not only the look of natural stone, but the texture of it as well,โ€ commented Heather.ย  โ€œAnd each tile on the floor or wall should look different, mimicking the fact that every piece of stone in nature is unique.ย  Cambria has some countertop selections available that mimic natural stone properties, such as incorporating varied patterning to mimic the movement youโ€™d find in a slab of granite.โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re working in a space such as a mudroom or a laundry room where youโ€™re looking to save on costs, there are some high-quality laminate countertop options that come in a variety of patterns and textures that would work well,โ€ says Heather.

Hardwood Vs. Tile Floors

โ€œThe question of how to treat your kitchen floors comes up most commonly among people who already have hardwood floors in the kitchen,โ€ says Normandy Designer Bryan Brisky. โ€œEconomically speaking, hardwood floors are typically more cost-effective than tile floors for material and installation.โ€ฏ While tile is more durable than hardwood, if it is damaged through cracking, staining or chipping it needs to be replaced; whereas hardwood can be sanded and refinished.โ€

Hardwood has a few more distinct advantages over tile, one being its staying power. โ€œHardwood has a timeless appeal, and if you find in a few years that you tire of the color and would like to update it, you can simply have it sanded and refinished.โ€ย

Another reason people often opt for hardwood floors in the kitchen is due to the open floorplans that many homes are creating. โ€œHardwood that flows from the kitchen to the living space helps make the rooms feel more connected and cohesive,โ€ notes Bryan.ย

Lastly, hardwood can be a bit more forgiving on your joints if you stand and work in the kitchen for long periods of time.ย ย

That isnโ€™t to say that tile doesnโ€™t have its merits, in fact this durable, long lasting flooring choice has a vibrant fan base. โ€œTile floors in the kitchen work well if youโ€™re contemplating a stained wood finish for your cabinets,โ€ shares Bryan. โ€œBy putting tile on the floor, you avoid having a sea of stained woods that can make the entire space look flat and uninspired.โ€ย

There are also so many varieties of tile to choose from, including options that mimic the look of natural stone or incorporate a pattern or design. โ€œThe right tile can make a striking design statement in your kitchen,โ€ says Bryan. โ€œJust be sure what you choose for the floor doesnโ€™t compete with your backsplash selection.โ€ย

One final point thatโ€™s certainly in the favor of tile floors in the Midwest โ€“ your ability to add a heated flooring mat under the tile to keep the kitchen floor warm and comfortable year-round. โ€œHeated floors are often considered for the bathroom,โ€ notes Bryan โ€œbut particularly if your kitchen is on a slab you may find that the warmth you gain from a heated floor becomes a true luxury for your kitchen.โ€ย

Selecting the right floor is just one piece of your kitchen remodeling puzzle. If you are considering a renovation project or contemplating more extensive changes to your home, you can set up a time with Bryan to talk about the possibilities.
