Hardwood Vs. Tile Floors

Green island in a white kitchen looking into the colorful dining room beyondAs your plans for a kitchen remodel start to take shape, one question that tends to pop up is โ€œWhat to do with the floor?โ€ Depending on your previous kitchen and the rest of your homeโ€™s flooring, this question may be a simple one to answer or the decision may be more fraught than you might expect.ย

โ€œThe question of how to treat your kitchen floors comes up most commonly among people who already have hardwood floors in the kitchen,โ€ says Normandy Designer Bryan Brisky. โ€œEconomically speaking, hardwood floors are typically more cost-effective than tile floors for material and installation.โ€ฏ While tile is more durable than hardwood, if it is damaged through cracking, staining or chipping it needs to be replaced; whereas hardwood can be sanded and refinished.โ€

Hardwood has a few more distinct advantages over tile, one being its staying power. โ€œHardwood has a timeless appeal, and if you find in a few years that you tire of the color and would like to update it, you can simply have it sanded and refinished.โ€ย

Another reason people often opt for hardwood floors in the kitchen is due to the open floorplans that many homes are creating. โ€œHardwood that flows from the kitchen to the living space helps make the rooms feel more connected and cohesive,โ€ notes Bryan.ย

Lastly, hardwood can be a bit more forgiving on your joints if you stand and work in the kitchen for long periods of time.ย ย

That isnโ€™t to say that tile doesnโ€™t have its merits, in fact this durable, long lasting flooring choice has a vibrant fan base. โ€œTile floors in the kitchen work well if youโ€™re contemplating a stained wood finish for your cabinets,โ€ shares Bryan. โ€œBy putting tile on the floor, you avoid having a sea of stained woods that can make the entire space look flat and uninspired.โ€ย

There are also so many varieties of tile to choose from, including options that mimic the look of natural stone or incorporate a pattern or design. โ€œThe right tile can make a striking design statement in your kitchen,โ€ says Bryan. โ€œJust be sure what you choose for the floor doesnโ€™t compete with your backsplash selection.โ€ย

One final point thatโ€™s certainly in the favor of tile floors in the Midwest โ€“ your ability to add a heated flooring mat under the tile to keep the kitchen floor warm and comfortable year-round. โ€œHeated floors are often considered for the bathroom,โ€ notes Bryan โ€œbut particularly if your kitchen is on a slab you may find that the warmth you gain from a heated floor becomes a true luxury for your kitchen.โ€ย

Selecting the right floor is just one piece of your kitchen remodeling puzzle. If you are considering a renovation project or contemplating more extensive changes to your home, you can set up a time with Bryan to talk about the possibilities. Made In The USA Kitchen Tribute

Normandy Remodeling Home Additions

With the 4th of July coming up in a couple days, we thought it’d be fun to share a (mostly) made in the USA kitchen project.

This kitchen was created by Normandy Designer Kathryn O’Donovan, and it’s almost entirely manufactured in the United States. Our clients and designers choose materials from all over the world for their beauty and performance, so there are just some items that are best selected outside of our borders. As a family-owned American business though, it always feels great to incorporate fixtures and materials from U.S. businesses.

Cabinets are often the first thing you’ll notice in a kitchen, and this is no exception. The cabinetry is Quality Custom Cabinetry which is manufactured in Pennsylvania. The pride in workmanship shows in these cabinets, and their beauty is matched by their durability.

The windows are manufactured by Pella in Iowa. Pella was founded in Pella, Iowa in 1925. They employ more than 8,000 people and are a wonderful resource for windows and doors.

The kitchen tile backsplash, which you can find along the sink wall, is handmade by Sonoma Tilemakers in California. Supporting artisans not only feels good, it also makes your home unique.

The appliances play a substantial role in this kitchen, including the 48″ wide refrigerator and the spectacular 60″ wide range. This couple loves to cook and it’s no surprise that the appliances are the centerpieces of the design. Most of the appliances are Sub-Zero and Wolf, manufactured in Wisconsin. Many of our clients choose a professional range for their kitchen remodel, and Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are some of our favorites with which to work.

The range hood and butcher block top were created by local craftsmen, not to mention the skilled tradespeople who brought all these different materials together to create this beautiful finished kitchen.

Read a bit more about this beautiful kitchen. If you’d like to talk to Kathryn about a mostly made in the U.S.A. kitchen remodel, you can set up a time to talk.
