Faulty to Functional Kitchen Remodel

While you can live with outdated finishes in your kitchen, a poor layout is a lot tougher to just suffer through. This family had a modest sized kitchen, which was made more challenging to work in because of the existing layout. The stove was right against a wall without landing space on both sides, and there was a doorway to the basement stairs that meant people would be passing through behind you as you cooked. Although the kitchen had somewhat of an open view into the dining room, the kitchen itself had a low ceiling with obstructions and beams that kept it from feeling like a continuation of the rest of the home. They knew that they needed help to create a functional kitchen remodel so that the space would work better for their family.

One of the key questions as the remodel was beginning was the artificially low height of the kitchen ceiling. โ€œAlthough we wanted to open up the ceiling and raise it to match the rest of the home, we werenโ€™t sure if there was a reason why the previous homeowners had kept it so low,โ€ says Normandy Designer Leslie Lee. โ€œWe were thrilled to find out that the only reason the ceiling was built lower was to accommodate a much shorter/standard cabinetry height, and thankfully there were no pipes or duct runs in the way. The new, higher ceiling not only makes the kitchen now flow better with the rest of the home, it has the added bonus of giving us more space for larger cabinets.โ€

The new layout now minimizes unnecessary traffic flow through the kitchen and makes the space more comfortable to work in. โ€œThe additional storage space we gained also let us incorporate some open shelving along with the Navy and White cabinetry to give it a modern and eclectic look,โ€ Leslie notes. โ€œThe waterfall edge peninsula acts as a bridge connecting the kitchen with the adjoining dining room, and the continuation of blue cabinetry throughout the kitchen and the dining space allow the rooms to blend seamlessly together.โ€

Adding-on Before Moving-in

Sometimes, finding the right home involves a bit of change before making it your own. That was the case for this suburban family, who loved the neighborhood and charm of their new potential home, but decided it needed a bit of TLC (and by TLC we mean space), before moving in.

Right off the bat, the master bedroom seemed out of proportion in comparison to the rest of the home. โ€œAlthough the bedroom had loads of space, it lacked closet storage and needed a major
layout to revamp,โ€ says Normandy Designer Leslie Lee. โ€œNot to mention, there were four family lowered two tiered kitchen island members and only three bedrooms and two bathrooms; whereas on the main level, the kitchen had an extremely compartmentalized set-up, with a peninsula directly adjacent to its eating area.โ€

As we know, when the remodeling begins, challenges do too. โ€œSince the master bedroom was so massive, we decided to re-purpose some of that space into the fourth and final bedroom; we just needed to make sure that this new space was on par with the other three bedrooms and their square footage,โ€ notes Leslie. โ€œWhen moving onto the kitchen area, which was extremely small and situated between the garage and powder room, the question was how to improve this layout and its flow to the rest of the home?โ€

The final results included a spacious addition with an enlarged kitchen, a new mudroom, and an enlarged family room (complete with a bar, of course) on the first floor. On the second floor, we expanded the master suite, created a fourth bedroom, and added a third bathroom. โ€œWe decided to re-purpose the existing breakfast/powder room area into the now extended kitchen, which was more open, spacious, and featured a lowered island eating area,โ€ Leslie exclaims. โ€œUpstairs, each family member has their own bedroom as well as a much appreciated additional bathroom. Style-wise, this family was a lover of all things simple-and-clean, so we made sure to integrate a transitional aesthetic that they seemed to love.โ€
