Preserving a Vintage Feel in a Newly Remodeled Space

The good news is that when the time comes to remodel, there are plenty of options that will allow homeowners to maintain the charm and integrity of the home, while adding useful updates that will improve day-to-day function.ย  One example is an Oak Park kitchen remodel by Normandy Designer Karen Chanan, which skillfully blends old with new.

Prior to remodeling, the kitchen was outdated and there were plenty of adjacent spaces that were underutilized. These closed off, blocks of room included a secondary room, dining room and butlerโ€™s pantry.

โ€œNow, the kitchen opens directly into the dining room, so it is one big space,โ€ added Karen. โ€œTo stay true to the home, we created the arch that separates the dining room from the kitchen.โ€

The kitchen was also enhanced with new updates such as white cabinetry, a mint, ceramic backsplash and quartz countertops. Additionally,ย the new layout allowed for a large island with seating.

However, not everything was shiny and new. The homeowners wanted to preserve some of the history of the home and opted to maintain its original, vintage stove.

โ€œWe designed the kitchen around this vintage stove,โ€ said Karen. โ€œFirst things first, we had to understand how to properly remove and reinstall it. From there, we designed cabinetry that would accommodate the lever on the left-hand side, which turned on the broiler.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d never know, but the piece of countertop next to the stove flips up, providing access to the lever when needed,โ€ mentioned Karen.

Additionally, care was taken with the design to enable the homeowners to easily slide the stove out should it need to be repaired.

All in all, this stove and the new arch help to maintain the original disposition of the home, while a new layout and updated materials breathe new life into the space. Kitchen Designs That Do Double Duty on Dishes

Dishwasher hidden behind cabinetry panelThere are plenty of features that can be doubled up in a kitchen. For example, many spaces have both a main sink and a prep sink. In some cases, kitchens can even have two islands to help manage food preparation and entertaining. Another scenario where two are better than one is when it comes to dishwashers.

โ€œDoubling up on dishwashers can be extremely useful for families who regularly cook, bake or entertain,โ€ said Normandy Designer Vince Weber. โ€œInstead of taking the time to complete separate loads, you can tackle the job by filling up both dishwashers.โ€

โ€œDepending upon your layout, keeping a dishwasher in the kitchen and one in the butler pantry can work really well,โ€ added Vince. โ€œStemware and barware can go in the pantry, while the heavy scrubbing cycle can be kept to the kitchen.โ€

If you prefer to keep the look of appliances to a minimum, dishwashers can be disguised as cabinetry too. Adding a cabinetry panel to the front of the dishwasher decreases the appearance of too many appliances in the space.
