Granite countertops have been the “it” natural stone for kitchen renovations since the 90’s. However, in recent years, homeowners and designers alike are instead choosing to opt for alternative materials.

“What initially drew designers to granite countertops was the fact that it was one of the first natural stones to become popular in kitchens. Previously, countertops were typically laminate or tile,” says Normandy Designer Liz Reifschneider. “The only other stone on the scene at the time was marble, which stains easily. Homeowners were drawn to granite because of its durability, making it the perfect countertop for active families or anyone who genuinely cooks.”

Design wise, granite tends to feature a blotchy grain design throughout. “With the light and bright kitchen trend in full swing, homeowners these days are gravitating towards a more subtle and muted color palette that showcases a cleaner aesthetic,” says Liz. “Granite is a more dominating material that demands attention in a visually heavy way, which doesn’t fit in well with today’s trends.”

Instead, designers are choosing to incorporate a more muted natural stone such as quartzite. “Not only is quartzite harder than granite, making it extremely durable, but it also features a more subtle tone on tone grain that complements monochromatic color schemes,” Liz notes. “It also helps that there are a ton of color and movement options to choose from if you still want the drama, making it the perfect fit for any kitchen.”

When choosing quartzite, be mindful of the variations in the material. “Some quartzite materials tend to be more delicate than others, which is why it’s important to speak to your fabricator to understand care instructions,” Liz says.
