The Versatile Style of a Minimalist Hood

Minimalist kitchen hood with textured vertical backsplash tileThere are several reasons why you might choose a more minimalist hood for your kitchen design. Thereโ€™s the aesthetic appeal, of course, wanting a cleaner, simpler design overall. Or maybe youโ€™ve already selected other statement pieces, and an elaborate hood would be too over the top.

โ€œWhen designing your kitchen, one element tends to be the star, and itโ€™s not always the hood,โ€ Normandy Designer Ashley Noethe says. โ€œIf you have a more decorative backsplash for instance, you may want to balance that out with a simpler hood design.โ€

A classic material for a minimalist hood is stainless steel. You can also choose to extend your cabinetry to streamline the design. โ€œWood is also a good choice due to its durability and customization options, like stain or paint,โ€ notes Ashley.

โ€œRift cut white oak is popular choice for custom pieces. Itโ€™s a sleek-looking wood that doesnโ€™t have a pronounced grain, and the lighter shade allows it to better absorb a range of stains,โ€ Ashley says. โ€œThere are also stucco or tile options that can keep a range hood design really simple.โ€

Minimalist hoods work well in both small and large kitchens.Modern white kitchen with dark gray island and drywall hood โ€œIn larger kitchens with high ceilings, a kitchen design that tries to fill that space can look busy and too visually heavy,โ€ Ashley says.

โ€œSimpler hoods are great in small kitchens as well. They can be a way to make the space feel larger since they donโ€™t take up too much space.โ€

Another benefit of a minimalist hood design is that itโ€™s also generally easier to access the mechanicals inside if repairs are needed.

โ€œSome local building codes require that the front panel be removable to access the ventilation mechanism if it needs to be serviced,โ€ Ashley says. โ€œA simpler panel can be easier to pop off versus something more ornate.โ€

Budget can also come into play. โ€œIf youโ€™re looking for a more cost-effective design, something like an understated dry wall hood may be a good option,โ€ Ashley says.
