When a kitchen remodel is done right, numerous details come together to make up a beautiful interior. A few of these particulars include lighting, cabinetry, layout and color palette. And there should always be multiple focal points in the kitchen — which include statement pieces such as range hoods and islands — and of course windows.

Perhaps one of the most common questions that arise if your kitchen lacks windows is — where do you put the kitchen sink? A very typical kitchen layout will place the sink directly in front of a window. This is a great choice for the view and the natural light it provides, but where should you put your sink if your kitchen doesn’t happen to have a window nearby?

A well-placed window is not always guaranteed, especially is situations such as condos. However, a sink area can be bright and cheerful with or without windows. One option is to add ambient and task lighting. Another idea is adding some interesting tile that enhances the area. And what you want to be looking at most while you’re at the sink can dictate the placement too — and that might be a direct view into the family room to keep an eye on guests of the kids.

Sinks are usually in front of a window because oftentimes there aren’t any cabinets above it. However, the sink can be placed elsewhere and still be very functional and beautiful. For example, a lot of times a sink in an island makes sense even if you have numerous windows. In this case, function trumps aesthetic!
