The Modern Classic Primary Bath

Freestanding tub makes a sculptural statement on a porcelain tile floor. This luminous primary bathroom strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern. “There’s a strong level of traditional detail through the vanity, finishes, color palette and arch elements, but the fixtures give it a modern edge,” Normandy Designer Abby Osborn says. “It’s a calming, clean design that still captures detail and can fit into nearly any home aesthetic.”

At the heart of this transitional bathroom design is a stunning walnut console vanity, designed as a furniture-style centerpiece rather than a built-in cabinet. “We chose drawers over doors and built the vanity as one complete piece, so it reads like freestanding furniture,” Abby says. The modern classic primary bath features walnut console vanity topped with quartzite countertop and paired with a textured wallpaper backsplash. Topped with a quartzite countertop and paired with a textured wallpaper backsplash that adds softness, the vanity features integrated cabinet pulls that sit flush for a seamless look.

In the shower, textured porcelain tile creates visual interest within the refined profile. “The large-format tile leans more modern, with fewer grout lines to give you a much cleaner look,” Abby notes. The shower is outfitted with a rain shower head, along with a bench and a shaving niche for comfort and usability.

Near the window, the freestanding tub makes a sculptural statement. With its Victorian-inspired form crafted from volcanic stone, it offers both old-world charm and modern performance. “The material helps retain heat, keeping bathwater warm longer,” says Abby.

Smart storage solutions elevate daily living. A linen cabinet with open shelving and a built-in hamper keeps essentials organized, and two recessed medicine cabinets — one equipped with an electrical outlet — offer discreet convenience. U-shaped top-drawer interiors in the vanity fit around fixed plumbing. Even the toilet room was carefully considered, featuring a skirted toilet for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance.

Underfoot, custom-laid porcelain floor tile leans more traditional, while polished nickel hardware adds a touch of luxe throughout the space. The result is a bathroom that feels timeless yet current — an expertly layered retreat where thoughtful design details quietly elevate everyday routines.
